Household Fire Prevention Tips

Extinguisher

The Christmas Day fire that killed two adults and three young children in Stamford, Connecticut has sent many rushing to check their own safety equipment.

Reports stated that the fire was caused by improperly discarded fireplace embers, which were removed so the children wouldn’t worry about Santa Claus coming down the chimney. Through this devastating tragedy we have learned the importance of household fire prevention.

Here are some tips for how we can all improve our fire safety awareness:

  1. Have any gas-powered dryers inspected.
  2. Never leave the kitchen while cooking.
  3. Inspect radiators and heating units.
  4. Test smoke alarms.
  5. Never leave a lit candle unattended. Keep all candles out of reach of children and pets.
  6. Keep a fire extinguisher near high-risk areas so that it’s easily accessible in the event of a fire.
  7. Install metal screens for fireplaces.
  8. Make an escape plan.
